SNC urges caution near waterways as more rain approaches

South Nation Conservation is urging residents to stay away from rivers, streams and low-lying areas as high water levels and faster flows create hazardous conditions.
The conservation authority issued a water safety statement Thursday, Oct. 15, covering the South Nation River watershed, with particular concern in the river’s headwaters and along its North Branch near North Grenville and North Dundas.
According to SNC’s bulletin, Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts up to 35 millimetres of rain by the end of Friday, Oct. 16.
Rain earlier this week has already raised water levels and flows. Saturated ground has limited capacity to absorb more rain, increasing runoff into rivers and streams. Banks may be slippery or unstable.
SNC advises parents to keep children and pets away from waterways. Residents in flood-prone areas should watch for changing conditions, check sump pumps, clear downspouts and driveway culverts, and secure items that could float away.
The notice is a water safety statement, not a flood warning.
It remains in effect until Oct. 20 at 5 p.m., or until an update is issued.
