EMBRUN — A small but highly visible piece of downtown Embrun is getting $20,425 in provincial money for a package of Main Street improvements.

Glengarry—Prescott—Russell MPP Stéphane Sarrazin announced the funding Aug. 28 with municipal representatives. The work centres on the Township parking lot at Notre-Dame and Blais, beside the New York Central Recreational Trail.

The Township says relocating the trail behind the historic train station will provide “a safer and more accessible route for all users.”

The project is funded through Ontario’s Rural Ontario Development Program Community Development Stream and is aimed at making the parking area more useful to residents, visitors, businesses and trail users.

Plans include landscaping, decorative lighting, parklet furniture, a bicycle rack and repair station, directional and safety signs, and active-transportation markings at the parking-lot entrance.

The location matters because the trail runs directly between Russell and Embrun and feeds pedestrians and cyclists into the village core. The improvements are intended to create a clearer connection between the trail and nearby businesses.

Most of the physical work is expected to be completed in spring 2027, with some work beginning earlier.

The announcement lands in the middle of the much larger Notre-Dame reconstruction project, which has made access and visibility for Embrun businesses a recurring issue at council this year.
